Are You Wasting Your Time?

There are many times when we may not even realize it until it is too late that all we have been doing in life is wasting our time. Sometimes what makes us come to this realization is either a sickness, a disability, a loss of some sort and none of this is necessary for us to come to this realization.

Now, this question that I just asked on the title will have different answers for everyone. That’s because everyone’s definition of living life and enjoying life will be different. What I may find as enjoyment may be different for someone else. So for this reason, you can’t go to anyone else for an answer, you have to look within you.

Even though the answer to this question will be different for everyone, there are some basic things that I think are time wasters for everyone no matter how different we may all be for certain things. Time wasters would be being angry at others, being worried all the time, not working on the relationships that truly matter most, taking those you love for granted, focusing on things that are no longer in your present life or focusing on what could have been but isn’t, being angry with Life for the things that you don’t have in life or for what was taken away from you. All these things are what I call paralyzers because they do just that, they paralyze you. They paralyze you mentally, physically and emotionally. They don’t help you move forward and see all the goodness that you still have. They make you blind. They hinder you from enjoying life.

Being angry at someone else is not hurting the other person, it is hurting you. The other person may not even be aware of what you are feeling but you are and that can make you even more angry because it does hurt to know that you care while the other person doesn’t. Depending on what it is that made you angry, that anger may be easy to let go or not. Whatever it is that made you angry, know that by continuing to feel this way, the only person who are hurting is yourself. There are times when other people may not even mean to harm us and so this is another reason why it is not worth getting so angry. As my very good friend Dawn reminded me over and over, no one can make you feel a certain way unless you allow them.

Being worried all the time is just paralyzing in every aspect. It paralyzes you mentally because the worry that you feel can stop you from thinking of making the right decision. It paralyzes you physically because the worry can make you not want to take any action. We usually worry about something that hasn’t happened yet and this stops us from living the present moment. If you want to be able to look at your past and think of it with good thoughts and feelings, then you must enjoy this moment because this moment will be past. Besides, worry just attracts more of the things that you are worried about.

One of the things that matters so much in life is the relationships we have in our life. Not cultivating them is, to me, equivalent to not saving money and the reason for this is because whether you realize it or not, the relationships that you have with others are an investment. What you give to others is what you get back. Family is one thing we tend to take for granted and think about this, when you are in your down moments, it isn’t a job or strangers who will be there for you, it is your family and close friends so make time for those you love and love you.

I can tell you that focusing on what no longer was in my present paralyzed me for a bit and made me waste my time by not looking forward. That is what focusing on what could have been but isn’t, focusing on what you no longer have and what you feel Life has taken away from you do to you, it keeps you from looking forward. I know it can be challenging at times but it is a must to look forward to more goodness in life. Part of life is transitioning from one stage of life to the next and we must embrace this if we are to be happy.

So now I challenge you to think whether or not you are wasting your time. This simple question can transform the way your life is right now if there is any part of it that you are not happy with and can add more well-being to you.

The Purpose of Disappointments

Disappointments…..it’s just one of those things that we will get for as long as we live because they are a part of life. It sucks to be disappointed but they are a part of life and it is necessary to accept this. So if this is part of life, then what is the purpose of disappointments? That’s what I would like to discuss in today’s post.

There are different kinds of disappointments. Some disappointments will come from people, others from circumstances. Some will come from ourselves, believe it or not. There are many possible reasons as to what led to that disappointment such as expectations that one may have, needs that were not met, even miscommunication or no communication from the other person or even from yourself (unfortunately, miscommunication or no communication is a big one and it shouldn’t be this way).

It is important whenever you are disappointed to understand why you are disappointed and what led to that disappointment. This is going to shed some light as to what happened and what you can learn from it so that should something like this happen again, you will know how to respond. Life is wonderful in the sense that Life always gives us back the lessons that we must learn and it will test us to see if we actually learned our lesson or not.

Disappointments can feel like a sour experience. Depending on the degree of your expectations, or the feelings you have towards that person that disappointed you or depending on the circumstance is what will dictate how sour that experience will be for you. Emotions and your perception of what happened play a big role in how you experience things. By no means should you just brush the disappointment you feel under the rug as something insignificant. This is almost equivalent to you having a deep wound and covering it up with a Band-Aid hoping it will heal on its own. I always encourage to feel the pain, although it sucks, and take care of the pain.

I’ve said and wrote before that part of well-being is growth. In order to grow, changes are involved and where there is change, there is learning as well. Disappointments offer you an opportunity to grow in many ways that can make you a better person. It may suck that a friendship broke, a relationship is torn, an opportunity may seem lost, but I’m starting to realize certain things- those that are meant to stay in your life will stay, if a relationship means so much to you, both of you will work things out and opportunities are never lost.

Allow yourself to grow from that disappointment. Look at what you could have done differently, not just what that other person did wrong, but also look at what role you played in that situation. If an opportunity didn’t seem to be yours, that’s because there is something better that is yet to come. If you take everything that comes to you, you will not leave space for the thing that is truly for you. Disappointments have their purpose but it is up to you to let that purpose come forth.

“Uplift Yourself”

Today as I’m sipping on my favorite brand of tea “Yogi tea”, I read the message that comes with the tea and it reads “Uplift others and uplift yourself”. The part that caught my attention was the “uplift yourself”. With so much that is going on in my life, it can be quite a challenge to uplift myself as I am sure that it is the same for others as well and so I thought of this importance after I read this.

There will be times in your life where others may not necessarily be there to uplift you and this is why it is very necessary to learn to uplift yourself. In the same way that you would encourage others, you need that same encouragement from yourself. “But how can I uplift myself when I have so much going on?” you may ask and what I can share is what I do on a daily basis to uplift myself.

I am aware that everyone’s belief may be different and I respect everyone’s belief and outlook in life so you can take the following advise in a way that suits you. I believe that prayer is one of the greatest ways to uplift yourself. There is something that I can not explain but that truly helps when you need encouragement.

Have faith or the belief that things will change and be better. That belief or faith helps you feel and think differently. It helps change your outlook on the situation. Without the belief or faith that things will be better, you will feel a heavy burden in you that just feels as if it’s dragging you down. This places weight on you that reflects everywhere you go.

Don’t forget to do things that make you happy. For everyone this will be different. For some it is reading, for others it is yoga, or perhaps going for a walk. It is crucial for you to do something that cheers you up because this helps you to relax. It is in a relaxed state that we can accomplish more and endure more.

Remember that you are loved. I think it is easy when one is going through so much or feeling sad or overwhelmed to think that they are lonely. Thinking in this manner just creates negative emotions within you that just doesn’t help. Remember that there are those who love you, who are influenced by you and who also depend on you. Knowing this will help you gain some strength since love is an empowering feeling.

These are just some of the many things that you can do to uplift yourself whenever you need encouragement. We sometimes tend to be so good at being there for others that we forget that we also need to be there for ourselves. This is part of taking care of yourself in order to ensure your well-being.
