Build Organ Reserve

What happened to me this passed weekend made me value the way I have been taking care of my body. I flew with some people who were throwing up, four to be exact, and one of them had the flu. Of course the person with the flu I was in contact with since she was at my side and she came close to me to tell me she had the flu. The following day I woke up feeling so drained that I was worried about traveling. I still flew out that night but by the time I was landing at the destination, I was feeling some body ache and was feeling cold. I honestly didn’t know how I was going to survive the trip since I was also having a headache.

When I came back to NY, my body was able to bounce back the following day and I thank God for that. I must say that was pretty quick. I know that is because of my organ reserve and it is this that I would like to write about.

I came across the term “organ reserve” while working on getting my credits for the requalification of my certification in Holistic Nutrition. What organ reserve means is that the organs have the capacity to allow the body to deal with stress through unused, extra functioning abilities. I compare this to savings. There will be times in life when financially you may be in a position where you will have to use your savings because times are tough. Organ reserve is like your savings account but just like you need to put money aside so that you can have for a rainy day, you have to build organ reserve so in times of stress, your body can cope and bounce right back up with no problem.

So how can you start building organ reserve? You start by starting NOW. Don’t wait until tomorrow, next week, next month or until the summer time. No, start NOW taking care of your body. This care, of course, will consist of eating healthy and taking the proper supplements that your body needs. The one mistake that many may make is thinking that they can have all their nutrition through food. Sorry but food is not grown the same way anymore and so many nutrients can be lost from the passage of time of the harvest to the cooking. Besides, I don’t think many of us, I include myself, eat the amount of foods that we need in order to get the amount of nutrients the body needs so that it can function at an optimum level. So make sure you supplement what you eat by choosing the right supplements. Being physically active also helps and to be physically active doesn’t mean doing hardcore workouts. It can be as simple as going for a brisk walk.

Make sure that mentally and emotionally you are right. When your mind isn’t right, nothing can be right. Now, I know that this can be a challenge at times. Trust me, I know, but it is a must to make an effort to be fit mentally and emotionally. Understand what drains you. Understand what triggers certain emotions in you. Do what feels good for you. Remember, you are an investment that you must make but you are worth the investment.

If you ever think for a moment that your body is just this thing that gets hungry every 2 1/2 to 3 hours and it isn’t something to truly treasure, think of what happens when you have no savings. When things really go sour, you have no cushion to fall back on. Well, same thing with your body. You want a cushion to fall back on and organ reserve is that cushion in times of stress. So I encourage you to start working on creating some organ reserve. If you need some help with that, you are more than welcome to contact me on this site.

Your Christmas Present From Life…

Christmas is just around the corner and for the past several weeks if not months before, I bet you have been planning what Christmas gifts to give to those you love. You probably have been thinking about what to get for yourself. Perhaps you even wondered what are others going to give to you. Have you ever thought, though, what is your Christmas present from Life? And more so, have you been good this whole year to have this present from Life?

There are several gifts from Life that we get that we tend to take for granted. I want to clarify that the reason why I write “Life” and not “God” is to respect those who may be atheist or who may have other beliefs so you may substitute “Life” to anything you believe in. Going back to today’s topic, some of Life’s gifts are health, love and prosperity.

Health is a gift, a very precious one, however, have you been behaving in order to enjoy this precious gift?! What do I mean with this question? I will explain. I can say from personal experience that health is something you truly enjoy when you understand how health works, when you have an understanding of how your body works, when you make the conscious effort to take care of yourself, when you invest in your health. Enjoying good health is your birth right but in order for you to enjoy this right, you have to take good care of your body. This is what I mean when I ask you if you have been good this whole year. The more you know, the better choices you make in regards to your health. Your health is the foundation of well-being.

Love, awww, the fuel of the soul, body and mind. I feel like without love we are literally dead. This is another thing we tend to take for granted. A healthy family, loving and supporting friends are gifts from Life. Have you been good in order to have this year round? What I mean with being good is have you been cultivating these relationships. Have you made it your goal to let those you love know how much they mean to you. Relationships are like plants, if they are not nurtured, they can die. They are nurtured with the care that you give to them. This is also part of having a balanced life.

Prosperity. This can be a tricky one because when one thinks of prosperity, the one thing that comes to mind is money. Indeed money is part of the prosperity piece. Having success in life is truly a gift but have you been good to deserve this? With this I mean if you have done all you could to allow prosperity in life. Have you made it your goal to educate yourself on topics that you need to learn. Have you made it your goal to love your money. Have you made it your goal to open yourself up to learning about creating different streams of income. Have you made it your goal to give to others. There are so many things that fall under the category of prosperity that I can’t fully cover in this post but that certainly are very important. This is just to give you some food for thought.

Certainly Life is constantly giving us gifts but it is up to us to keep earning those gifts with every action that we take. Life does its part but you too have to do yours if you are to see things going your way. This is all part of that well-being that we all strive for. With this I wish you all Happy Holidays.

It All Comes Down To Your Choices

I found it interesting that someone came across my blog by typing “I woke up feeling sad, what does this mean” in their search. Whoever it was that typed this and came across my blog, first I would like to thank you for reading my blog and I hope that today’s post can shine a light to what it is that you are searching.

I do believe that there are reasons for our emotions. Whether we understand that emotion or not, that is a different story and a different topic that I can discuss another time. The reason why I find it so essential for me to write today’s post is because perhaps many feel things that they may not understand and are trying to understand the “why”.

When feeling down, it is important to understand why you feel down and it is even more important for you to know that it all comes down to your choices. You make the choice everyday as to how you are going to feel about things, how you are going to let things affect you and you are the one who chooses whether or not you are going to live a happy life. You do have control over your life in many ways whether you realize this or not.

When you feel sad, you should ask yourself why is that and make the decision to be happy. Make that decision that you will have that life that you always wanted. Make that decision to have a healthy life. Make that decision to surround yourself by loving and supportive people. Make that decision to be the best you that you can be. Know that your emotions are a part of you but they don’t have to rule you. I would like to clarify that I am not saying to ignore your emotions or that you just force yourself to feel happy when feeling sad, no, not at all. I would like to say that if you constantly feel sad for no reason for more than two weeks, I recommend you seek professional help. There is nothing wrong with seeking professional help when you need it. But know that you do have control over your life.

When a situation or a person “makes” you feel a certain way, know that the choice is yours as to how you are going to allow that person or situation to make you feel. The one in control of your emotions is YOU. No one and nothing else.

If there is a situation that just doesn’t make you happy, the choice is yours as to whether or not you will continue in that same situation. You have two choices- you either change the situation or you change your perspective of the situation. Staying miserable in the same situation shouldn’t be a choice and once again, the choice is always yours.

Everything from what we eat, the friends we have, the person we marry, the way we live, the way we think and everything in between are choices that we all make on a daily basis that impact our life even if it’s in small ways. You always have to remember no matter what, it all comes down to your choices.

What’s In Your Toolbox?

Most of us at home have a toolbox filled with tools that we need when something around the house needs a fixing. There are obvious things that we need to have like a screwdriver, a hammer, some nails, etc. and these are just the essentials. Then there are other things that depending on your house needs you may have that perhaps are not so important but you still have them anyways. Besides this toolbox, there is another toolbox that is so essential to your everyday life that many of us neglect and that is a toolbox that no one should be without because it is the kind that is armed with essentials for dealing with everyday life and that is what I would like to call your Wellness Toolbox.

Ok, that name I just made up but if you think about it, just like there will be things around the house that will need some fixing and things get loose sometimes, you too will need some repairs from the wear and tear of everyday life. This is a toolbox that you may access everyday or perhaps some days but it is essential that you start thinking now about your Wellness Toolbox.

So what does this Wellness Toolbox consist of? It will consist of what you will do or use when you are stressed, foods in the fridge already prepared or in your pantry that you can eat when you feel your body may feel down, rituals that you do on a daily basis to guarantee your inner balance and healthy relationships with great people who love you and understand you.

Stress is not meant to be eliminated from your life. Because of this, it is important to learn to manage stress. If you haven’t done this already, think of things that calm you and make you feel good. It can be anything from yoga to meditation. Anything that relaxes you is what is important. The reason why you want to know ahead of time what these things that relax are is because in time of need you want to have access to these tools.

During this flu and cold season, I make sure to have my soup already prepared. I make a soup that I consider and call my penicillin because it has ingredients that just boost the immune system. I have my healthy snacks ready and handy and I have my multivitamins with me that I take daily to ensure that I take care of my body on a cellular level. Have foods already handy that you know your body needs and keep the foods that don’t provide any nutrition out of your fridge and pantry. Like the saying goes “out of sight, out of mind” so if you stack up on healthy foods, you won’t have any option but to eat healthy foods.

Have rituals that you do on a daily basis to guarantee your inner balance. Why? Because you are a total of what you do on a daily basis. Everything that you do adds up. Make sure that you are incorporating some physical activity. Make sure that you have healthy mental habits. Make sure you take high quality supplements. Make sure you are eating right. There are many other rituals you can incorporate but because I don’t want to make this post too long, I just mention a few.

Last but not least, cultivate healthy relationships with great people who love you and understand you. Why should this be in your Wellness Toolbox? Because your social life is part of your well-being. The people who you surround yourself by play a big role in your overall life and well-being. Being around positive, loving people just adds health into your life. We are social beings and we need to surround ourselves with other people for our mental and emotional well-being, however, make sure they are the right people for you because the wrong people can just be disastrous to your life.

If you haven’t yet, make sure to create your Wellness Toolbox now. Just like you have a physical toolbox in case something needs a fixing around the house, there are times when our body may need some “fixing”. Just like your physical house needs maintenance, your body needs maintenance as well and you provide it by having a Wellness Toolbox that you can access when you need it.

Are You Feeding Diseases?

These past few days have been very stressful for me because of what my family and I are going through with my dad’s health. Finding him a rehab center was more challenging than we have thought. Luckily this week, after many weeks of looking for a rehab center for him, we finally found one that accepted my dad with all his medications. After one emergency after another, after speaking so much with social workers, with doctors, doing research, going around checking out facilities, there were times that I put my health aside, really. I skipped meals these past days, it was challenging to sleep and it got to a point where I knew that my regular routine was lost. I no longer needed strong coffee to feel jittery because I was able to sense that my body, even when there was no reason to feel agitated or stress, it still thought it was in a state of emergency. All this got me thinking about how easy it is to become chronically sick over time and because of this I ask you this one question…are you feeding diseases?

One thing that we sometimes fail to realize is that all of us are prone to diseases. All of us. However, what determines whether we develop a disease or not is our lifestyle. Our genes do play a role, however, whether or not you develop a disease will also depend on your overall lifestyle. This is why I do advocate not to abuse your body on a daily basis because there will be times that because of life’s circumstances your health may be compromised a bit. This is why it is important to give your body the basics on a daily basis. The basics are proper nutrition, proper sleep, physical activity and stress management.

Proper nutrition is the FUEL for the body. You are on the outside what you put in the inside. If you want everything to work properly in your body, feed it not just to control your hunger but to have OPTIMUM health. One thing that I must include with your nutrition is supplementation. It is CRUCIAL to take supplements. Why? Because as the word itself implies, it supplements what you eat. Supplements are not meant to make up what you don’t eat, they are meant to ADD to what you are already eating. However, when choosing supplements, make sure you choose high quality ones which would be pharmaceutical grade. I can discuss more on another post.

Make sure you get enough sleep. Sleep for everyone will be different since some may need more than eight hours of sleep while others may need less. Sleep is so crucial because it is when you sleep that cells are replenished, the immune system gets a boost, anything that you are learning are reinforced in the brain and the list goes on and on as to the benefits of sleep. This is a topic all on its own. If you want to feel balanced, alert, and not feel so hungry, make sure you get sleep.

Awww physical activity, a must to maintain health. It helps the blood circulate better throughout the body, it helps release the feel good chemicals in the body, and there is something about working out that just makes you want to keep up with the healthy eating. Being physically active creates a domino effect in your life so even if you have to start small, do so but stay active. Your body was designed to be in motion.

The last thing but equally important is stress management. Stress was not meant to be eliminated from your life. Stress has its purpose since it helps prepare the body to either “fight or flight” a situation that may be threatening for us. Even though stress has its evolutionary purposes because stress does help the body prepare to deal with a threatening situation or with an emergency, constant stress creates damage to your body over time. This is why it is important that you know how to manage stress. Find things that are soothing and relaxing for you and try to do those things on a daily basis. This is not a luxury, it is a necessity for your overall well-being.

Your overall well-being depends on all of the things that I have discussed in this post. You are worth the investment and time in yourself. Should you want to learn more about supplementation since I am passionate about that topic as well as overall well-being, you can contact me by filling out the “Contact Me” form. I encourage you now to start taking a look at these different areas of your life and to start taking care of your body now.

Are You Putting Your Health On Hold?

It’s interesting how I hear many times “I’m very hungry but I have to finish this task first” or how people on a constant basis sacrifice their sleep in order to get things done. I even hear from people that they have no time to workout. In my mind, it is no wonder that as a society we are getting sicker and sicker. With the exception of those who work at night because there are jobs where you have to be up all night but you can recuperate the sleep during the day, if you are one of those people doing any of the things I just said, then I ask you, why are you putting your health on hold? If you are doing any of these things, you are indeed putting your health on hold whether you realize it or not. Just like you wouldn’t put your car on hold when it’s low on gas by continuing to drive knowing that you are running out of gasoline, you don’t put your health on hold by not eating, not sleeping, not hydrating it right, not eating the right foods. Your body, your whole body, for that matter, needs to be taken care of as if you were taking care of the most precious thing that you have because indeed it is the most precious thing that you have.

When I say the whole body, I am referring to not just the physical aspect of your body, I’m also referring to the mental, spiritual and emotional aspect because when either one of these parts of you is suffering, it only takes one for all the other parts to be affected with time.

It’s important in life to have balance because it is that balance that helps you achieve your highest well-being. You can not achieve your highest when every other area of your life is good except for your emotional life, for example. It’s only a matter of time for the imbalance that you feel emotionally to start taking over the decisions you make, the things you attract, etc. It is important that you make it a point to strive for balance. I do understand that at times it can be a challenge but it is possible.

It’s important to take a look at all the areas of your life. If you are not happy with your life, ask yourself why. If you are not eating right, find out why. If you can’t seem to get yourself to exercise, find out why. If finding the answers to all these questions feels overwhelming, I suggest you hire a coach. A good coach helps you get from point A to point B. Now if you have serious emotional and mental concerns, by all means, get a good therapist or psychologist. There is nothing wrong with that. I have noticed that what many need is accountability when it comes to achieving their goals and that is one of the things that a good coach can help you with. The point is that you can not afford to be putting your health on hold any longer. Every day and every thing that you do matters and YOU matter as well. Always keep this last phrase in the forefront of your mind.

Are You Making Daily Deposits to Your Health?

This past weekend was a very stressful weekend to the point that I thought I was going to have a breakdown. I have had a lot going on caring for a loved one and it can be very overwhelming if one is not careful. And why did it get to this point? Because this weekend made me realize one thing that I am asking you today, are you making daily deposits to your health?

This weekend I realized that for some time I had stopped making my usual deposits to my health and when we do this, well, it is only a matter of time till we become bankrupt in terms of health.

Everyday we expect so much from our bodies that we forget that we have to do things on a daily basis to nurture it. We need to make daily deposits to our health because we are constantly making small withdrawals but there are moments in life in which we may have to make a big withdrawal and we will want to have the strength and the leeway to do so. What do I mean with “the leeway to do so”? For instance, if you constantly deprive your body of sleep, constantly eat junk food, are constantly stressed, there is no way that you will be able to afford to make the “big withdrawal” of perhaps missing sleep or messing up with your eating when things are really getting tough in life. Because part of life is the tough times, there will be moments where if you don’t have a plan in hand, your well-being may be compromised perhaps because a loved one is sick, because of a breakup or anything that may be taking up a lot of your energy.

One of the biggest ways you can make great deposits is by making sure you get plenty of sleep. Sleep has its purpose and one of them is that it restores your body. Notice when you get sick, your body craves bed. That is because there are cells that are being replenished, growth hormones are being secreted while you are in deep sleep, memory is also being restored and the list goes on and on as to why it is critical to get a good night sleep.

Eating right for the most part is so essential to your overall well-being and the purpose of eating goes beyond satisfying hunger. Eating for the body is equivalent to you putting gasoline in your car, it serves to fuel the body. So when you give your body the right nutrients, you are feeding it to provide you with energy and strength. Food is basically equivalent to a drug since it does interact with every part of your body since food does affect your mood and thinking as well. Every time that you put in the right foods, you are making small deposits to your health. And if you want to know what I mean with the right goods, you can listen to my talks on my online radio show.

In today’s society it seems like relaxing is a luxury but it is not a luxury, it is a necessity. The more you do, the more you need to relax. Whatever it is that relaxes you, do it on a daily basis. I know for us women sometimes caring for a loved one can make us feel good but it is important to remember that we need to care for ourselves as well. If yoga relaxes you, do it! If reading relaxes you, do it! If exercising relaxes you (I know I feel good after a workout), then do it! But it is essential everyday to do something just for yourself that relaxes you. Relaxing serves as a way to prevent you from becoming too stressed out. Since stress was not meant to be eliminated, we can only manage it and doing things that relaxes you is a way to manage stress.

I can go on and on about ways to make deposits to your health but I think these are the main three that so many of us may struggle with, especially during very difficult times. We live in a society where so many people are sleep deprived, many may not even eat a healthy diet and definitely for many it seems like relaxing isn’t even possible but it is a necessity if you are to have balance in life. I can just tell you from personal experience that making these small deposits daily does add up and can prevent you from going bankrupt (bankrupted meaning low in energy, not in a good mood, etc), especially during difficult times.
