Overwhelmed: A Plague to Your Well-being

Feeling overwhelmed can be very disabling and it is precisely for this reason that I must discuss this on this blog.

Well-being is about joy, balance, harmony, good energy and loving life. Feeling overwhelmed takes away from all this and that’s when ailments can start. If you are feeling sick, tired most of the time, mentally clouded and a lack of purpose and joy, ask yourself if you’re feeling overwhelmed.

There are many reasons one can feel overwhelmed, one of them being having so much to do. I do want to emphasize that feeling overwhelmed is not equivalent to being busy. A good friend of mine, Dawn, brought up a very important distinction during one of our conversations and it is this- being busy isn’t equivalent to being productive. Why do I feel it is important to mention this? Because perhaps your feeling of overwhelm comes from being busy of not being productive.

When feeling overwhelmed, it is important to understand the cause. Is it all the responsibilities that you have that causes this feeling? If so, why? Is it that there are changes that you want to occur? If so, what are these changes? Is it a relationship that you currently have that makes you feel overwhelmed? If so, why is that?

Many times the feeling of overwhelm comes from some dissatisfaction that we currently have and are not aware of it. This is why I have stated over and over again that it is important to pay attention to your emotions. It is important to embrace them. They are feedback from your soul. By ignoring your emotions, you are ignoring important information from your true essence.

When feeling overwhelmed it is important to embrace it, sit with it and understand it. Once you take the time to understand it, you will know what steps to take in order to feel better.

So if you are currently feel overwhelmed, I want to encourage you to embrace it, sit with it and understand it. Don’t avoid feeling this way because otherwise you will be missing on important info that can lead to greater change and well-being.

Know Your Limits and Respect Them

Last week and this week, so far, have been challenging weeks between flying a lot and finalizing my manuscript which I must say, I have high respect for editors because editing your own work even after your work has been edited is not easy. It can be challenging juggling many things at once. It is great to have many goals and if I were to list the ones I have at this moment, you would agree that they are a lot. The exhaustion I felt, my eyeballs hurting from all the reading as well as feeling stressed leads me to writing this post- it is important to know your limits and respect them.

No matter how many goals you may have, know that even though the sky indeed is the limit, because you are only human you have certain limits and it is important to respect them. It’s possible to achieve so much, it’s possible to get many things done but not all at once.

Remember that the more you want and do, the more you need to pause, relax, and have breaks. This is not about being lazy, not at all. This is about you not burning out. If you allow stress to get to you, in the end you will be no good. It is important to remember that no matter how many things you want to accomplish, you can only do what you can do and you still need to be proud of yourself for that.

We all have certain limits and this is because we are only humans, not machines. Even machines if they are pushed to the limit they break down. We all have certain limits because of time since we only have 24 hours in a day. We all have certain limits because of our body in the sense that you never want to push your body too far. The best way to not get burned out, not get yourself sick and not be overwhelmed is by knowing your limits and respecting them.

Your body will tell you when you are reaching your limit. If you feel terribly exhausted or even sick, you know you have reached your limit. If you are starting to feel angry and irritable, you are reaching your limit. If you are no longer enjoying what you are doing, you are reaching your limit. You will receive feedback when you are reaching your limit.

You respect your limits by mentally reminding yourself that you are doing the best you can. By still giving yourself a pat on the back for what you have accomplished during the day. You do this by taking breaks when needed and not being so hard on yourself when you didn’t accomplish a certain thing you wanted to accomplish that day. You respect your body when it is tired and give your body all it needs in order to keep itself strong. Remember that your body is your primary vehicle and if that isn’t working, nothing will work. Rome was not built in one day and so whatever it is that you are wanting to do will take time. You will always be a work in progress.

So far I respected my limits by sleeping as much as I needed since my sleep was a bit compromised. Since I enjoy cooking, I made myself some delicious meals. I remind myself that I am doing the best that I can even if I am unable to keep up with some of the things that I had in mind to do, like blog last week. I had to remind myself that I am only human and as such, I am not perfect and that’s ok. It’s ok not to be perfect and not doing things exactly as I said to myself that I would. This is the same that I encourage you to do.

Knowing your limits and respecting them is a must for your well-being. If you try to be superman or superwoman, you will find yourself all burned out real quick. It’s best to be like the tortoise and be slow but steady. That’s how you get further in life. This doesn’t mean laziness, let me clarify, this just means that you don’t burn yourself out trying to do so much all at once.

Take Off the Blindfold!

Blindfolds are only good for sleeping, they are not good to be wearing as you are going about your day. You need clarity in life, you need transparency, you need to know where you are going- something that a blindfold prevents you from having.

The blindfold that I am referring is clearly not the actual blindfold that some may wear at night. The blindfold that I am referring to is the invisible one that we sometimes decide to wear. Yes, I dare to write that “we sometimes decide to wear” because at any moment, we can decide to see things for what they are.

First, I want to start of by discussing why one may decide to wear a blindfold. There may be several reasons but I believe the most basic and biggest one and I would dare say THE reason is the needs that one may have. Yes, needs can be a bitch. The need to feel loved, the need to feel accepted and the need to belong, those basic human needs can make us a slave willing to wear a blindfold. Needs when not met can make us very hungry and it is that hunger that drives us to wear that blindfold.

Blindfolds are horrible for everyday life because they don’t allow you to see where you are going. You make yourself vulnerable to tripping and falling which can lead you to hurting yourself so badly. Not knowing where you are going can make you feel vulnerable and not in a good way. Not knowing where you are going can lead you to make unwise decisions. Not knowing where you are going makes you allow anything that come your way and I can tell you from personal experience that not everything that comes your way may be for good. This is why it is important to know where you are going.

Blindfolds prevent you from seeing what is in front of you. Many times people hint us as to who they really are and what their intentions are but we decide to ignore them because we feel the need to belong or feel loved or be accepted. Because not everything that comes your way may be good, it is important to already know that you are love and are loved so that you can come from a place of clearly seeing who the person that is in front of you is and what their intentions are towards you. You don’t want to ignore red flags.

The best way to prevent wearing a blindfold is to understand what makes you wear one to begin with. It is only through understanding that you are able to know what triggers this. Remember that blindfolds are not good for you to wear when it comes to everyday life- they prevent you from seeing where you are going and what is in front of you.

The Greatest Part of Endings

The ending is the beginning of something bigger and better. The ending is the closure of something that no longer serves you. There are things that come into your life just to serve a purpose. This includes opportunities and people. Sometimes we have the tendency to extend the life of something that no longer has a life. What I mean with this is that sometimes there are things and people that we hold on to that we need to let go because its purpose was already served. There are people and opportunities that are meant to be for a lifetime but trust that you will know the difference.

And what is that difference? When it comes to people, even during turbulent moments, you still are able to endure. No relationship is perfect and in every relationship there will be differences. It is not the turbulent moments nor the differences that define the quality of the relationships nor how long it will last- it is how those turbulent moments and differences are handled that marks the difference.

When it comes to opportunities, you will feel and it will be evident that its expiration date is arriving soon. Somehow things don’t flow or go right, there is one problem after another or somehow that opportunity may seem small for what you want or are yet to be.

Being able to recognize these things are so crucial to your well-being because this will help you avoid unnecessary suffering. When you are able to recognize whether someone is a person for a lifetime (and with this I also include friendships, not just romantic relationships) and when you’re able to recognize whether an opportunity is a lifetime one, suddenly the ending won’t feel like a loss, rather it will feel like a gain because in essence it is a gain. It is a gain because you’re moving forward. It is a gain because you’re growing. It is a gain because those things are moving out of the way to make way for other things that do belong in your life.

It is important for your well-being to know and remember that not everything that comes into your life are meant to be a lifetime and that’s ok. Remembering and knowing this will help alleviate some unnecessary sadness and suffering that can hinder you from seeing and receiving the goodness that are yet to come.
