The Positive and Negative of Everything

I’ve been pondering and asking myself why for many great things there has to be a negative to it. I’m working out this morning and although I love to workout and I’m helping my health with that, my hair has to be a nice mess afterwards. It makes me feel as if I have to choose between my body or my hair. Same thing with other decisions that I have to make, there are positives and negatives to everything. It makes me wonder why this is and this is what today’s post will be about.

I think one of the best comparisons to describe how life functions is a battery- it has a positive and a negative side. The battery, in order to function the way it is supposed to, needs both sides. If both sides are positive or negative, it just can’t work right. For as much as we would like for life to just have the positive, it can’t function if there is no negative.

So what’s the purpose of having both in our life? They both help balance each other out. This goes with everything in life. You can’t understand what true happiness is unless you know what sadness is. You can’t fully comprehend what true abundance is until you experience lack. You don’t fully appreciate your body until you get sick. You don’t fully appreciate the role someone plays in your life until you miss them. Certain places have to have their own downside because otherwise if it were to suite everyone, there would be a problem whether that problem is a place being overpopulated or very stressful, etc. This is what having the good and the bad can do, it can balance things out.

Balance is what contributes to your well-being and this is key. You need both sides in order to balance out your life. It is through balance that things can work in harmony. Nature intended it to be that way.

Having the negative along with the positive can bring out the creative side in us. This is because the negative can make you look for solutions as to how to a handle a situation. For example, I have to be creative with my hair in order to make it look nice after I workout. Certain things force the creative side of you and that is great.

So, if nature intended it this way, how can one handle the positives and the negatives when making certain decisions? When it comes to making decisions, you have to see what weighs more for you. It’s a matter of knowing who you are and knowing what matters most to you.

When it comes to cases where the negatives of something highly impacts your well-being, if it’s a decision that you made to have that positive in your life but it comes at a high price, then you have to mold yourself to the negative. What I mean with this is to find a way to work around the negative. For instance, if it’s a job that affects your health due to odd hours of work, then create your life and make a schedule that can still fit your job. The point is that you want to work with what you have and make the most of it.

Life indeed is like a battery with its positive and negative sides and both are needed in order for things to work in harmony. Both sides are needed in order to have balance in life. I encourage you to start looking at everything from this perspective.

There Is Value In the Missing

Perhaps many don’t want to miss things. We don’t want to really miss the one we love, we long for certain experiences or places, we long for certain feelings. However, believe it or not, there is is value in the missing and this is what today’s post is about and as you keep reading, you will notice how this ties to your well-being.

Missing something or someone provides important elements to your well-being, one of them being appreciation. We tend to appreciate what we don’t have or what we lack. This is why it is great to miss. Think about this for a moment, if you have the person that you love with you 24/7, overtime you end up taking that person for granted. This is why it is important to give each other space to miss each other because you will end up appreciating that person more.

Missing something or someone helps you see the value in certain things in your life. The reason for this is because what missing helps create is distance and it is that distance that helps you see things from another perspective. For instance, going to your job all the time without any time off can make you feel fed up with your job. However, you give yourself some distance away from it and you can appreciate all that your job provides for you that goes beyond the monetary and this is just one example of many.

Missing something or someone helps create balance and this is because as an Italian saying goes “too much is the same as too little”. It is this missing factor that helps balance the “too much” part. You need that distance apart from everything and everyone so that you can appreciate. You need to know how it feels like not to have that thing or person for a while for you to be grateful and happy once that thing or person comes back.

Well-being is about balance, appreciation, living fully and happiness. Missing something or someone seems to add these very things that we need by providing us with that space and distance that we need in order for us to truly appreciate what we have and have a different, healthy perspective in life.

What Do You Think/Feel You Deserve?

Today I would like to write about deserving and what does it take to be deserving of anything. I’m going to start off by asking you, what do you think/feel you deserve? That’s right, this is this week’s question and I ask you to take a deep look within to know your answer.

The reason why it is important to know what you think and feel you deserve is because this has a strong correlation with your overall well-being. How so? Whatever you feel or think you deserve is what you will get. So if you think and feel that all you deserve is mistreatment from others, then guess what, that’s exactly what you will get. If instead you know, think and feel that you deserve love and respect, you will get just that. Your overall well-being whether you realize it or not, is a reflection of what you think and feel you deserve. When you know you deserve better, you don’t accept anything less. This is why the topic of deserving can not be left out when it comes to your well-being.

So with all this said, what does it take to be deserving of anything? It is your birthright to be loved, receive love, give love, be healthy, be happy, be wealthy, etc. So it is not a matter of whether there is something that you must be in order to be deserving but it does take you believing with your heart and mind that you are deserving of anything that you want. The most important element here is YOU. This whole act of deserving has nothing to do with your parents, with your friends, with what others think and all to do with how you think and feel about yourself. If you don’t feel deserving, it is important that you work on your self-concept and self-esteem. There is no way around it. This is necessary work for your overall well-being.

Deserving or not deserving….that may seem to be the question but that question is only in your head because you were and always will be deserving of the things that you want. It is a matter of what you think/feel you deserve. So with this, I encourage to start knowing with your mind and heart that you are deserving of all that you want and need.

Start Applying That Butter!

There are times when it will feel as if you can’t help but get frustrated at everything and everyone around you. There will be times when you will feel mentally and emotionally overwhelmed. There are certain times in life when it feels as if it’s hard not to avoid feeling irritated at things or people. It is times like these that you may wonder “what is the key to not letting things bother you as much?!” There is one answer to this and it’s something that a colleague and a friend of mine, Henry, told me years ago and it’s this- start applying that butter!

“Start applying that butter?!” you may be thinking and saying. Yes, start applying that butter all over your body, not physically but mentally. Mentally you are going to imagine yourself applying butter all over your body from head to toe. The key is to not allow anything to stick to you for too long. Butter is slippery so by applying that butter, you allow anything that tries to touch you to slide right through you. You have to make sure to apply that butter from head to toe. Of course you’re not going to really apply butter on you, that is why you will do this mentally.

It is best to apply the butter first thing in the morning that way you arm yourself. You want to make sure you start your day right so this is why you want to do this in the morning. I think it’s best to do before you get out of bed, just mentally visualize yourself applying butter all over your body. What you are doing with this is mentally preparing yourself to not let things get to you. Remember, this first starts in the mind. Your most powerful weapon is your mind and so when your mind is armed and loaded with powerful affirmations and thoughts, you face the world prepared.

A vulnerable mind is like a skin that has a wide open wound- it makes itself susceptible to harmful bacteria and infections. With “harmful bacteria and infections” I am referring to negative words that others may have, other people’s bad attitudes that we allow ourselves to take personal, other people’s drama and so on. Harmful bacteria and infections, if left untreated, can become deadly for the body- likewise, “harmful bacteria” and “infections” that we allow in our minds can become deadly, killing our chances of living a fulfilled life.

When I heard this phrase several years ago, I couldn’t help but love the phrase and apply it to my life. Now I encourage you to apply this into your life. Wake up every morning applying that butter on you so that anything that tries to touch you can just slide right through you.

Think About Something Else

Some of you may know that my family and I are going through a difficult moment with my dad’s health. Today I spent the day with my mom and had to convince her, literally force her, not to go to the hospital to see my dad since seeing the state in which my dad is in is too hard for her. This was my suggestion since she is every single day by his side without taking care of herself the way she should which is not healthy for her. During the day it was tempting to speak about my dad and I had to remind her to think about something else. I am happy to know that this helped and this is what I would like to encourage you to do in today’s post if you are going through a rough time.

Indeed it is very tempting to think about the very thing that makes you sad, however, this is not beneficial for you in any way. Constantly thinking about what hurts you or makes you sad will make you spiral down, hurting your well-being in every way. In the end, you are of no good to yourself nor to others.

Thinking about something else isn’t about making believe that the problem or what hurts you isn’t there. Instead, it is about restoring your mental and emotional sanity so that you don’t start heading towards the negative path. And what is that negative path? It’s the negative path of feeling depressed, of being mentally clouded, feeling hopelessness, thinking and feeling that things are coming to an end, etc. These are path of destruction which leads you to a dead end street. It doesn’t serve you. In life, in order for you to solve problems and get things done you need strength and clarity and being on the negative path robs you of both these things.

How can you think about something else? Either listen to a music that makes you feel really good, talk to a really good friend that you trust, read the bible if that helps you, meditate, watch a funny movie, anything that works for you. Do your best to avoid talking about the topic that hurts you. Do your best not to look at things that reminds you of what hurts you. Again, this is not about you making believe that the problem or what hurts you isn’t there, this is about restoring your mental and emotional sanity. Wherever your mind goes, the emotions follow and wherever the emotions go, the body follows. You want to avoid creating a negative domino effect that takes a long time to repair. Also remember that the way you live your life affects others as well so take that into consideration when you feel really sad.

It is only normal to go through a rough time every so often in life. That’s because it’s life. What is important is how you deal with the rough times and one good way is to remind yourself every so often to think about something else. Doing so will help preserve your mental and emotional sanity, contributing to more well-being not just for yourself but for others as well.

It Only Takes Small Steps

There are times in our life where we want massive changes. It’s normal, especially if we feel that life isn’t quite the way we want it to be or the way we know it is capable of being. We may be fooled into thinking that in order to make those massive changes, we need to take massive steps and this is not the way it works. In order to make massive changes in your life, believe it or not, it only takes small steps.

I remember that when I wanted to move to another state, I thought of it as a massive step and indeed it is a massive step but in order to make that massive step, I had to start small. So it all started with me looking online and checking out areas and apartments online. Small step but it lead to the massive change.

If you feel stuck in life, it’s easy to remain in that stuck state but you must make a small step first. Probably you need to clean out one area of your apartment in order to start feeling free. Probably you need to first start letting your partner know that you both need to talk since you feel “stuck” in that relationship. Probably you need to start by letting that particular person know how something that they are doing “makes” you feel. Probably you need to start a job search in order for you to change careers. Probably it is something as simple as changing your mindset, which sounds simple but for some it may be a big challenge.

No matter what it is that you want to do, it is a must to remember that it only takes small steps. A penny is just a penny but if you have ten pennies that makes 10 cents, 25 pennies make 25 cents and so every small step you take adds up. With this I want to encourage you to start taking small steps in life.

The Art of Detachment and Its Value To Your Well-Being

Detachment, I think it’s a word worth exploring and writing about when it comes to your well-being. This may seem the opposite of what you need in life since part of what gives life meaning is the connections and attachments that we have to certain things but whether you recognize this or not, there is a certain level of detachment that we must have for things and people if we are to be mentally and emotionally sane and this is what this post will be about.

The art of detachment is a very important one for your well-being because by detaching yourself from things and people, you are relying upon yourself for your own happiness and to create the life you want. By no means do I mean that you will not create bonds with others or that you will isolate yourself from others or that you will not have any form of feelings towards things or others, not at all! We all need to feel a certain level of attachment and connection to things and people since we are all social beings. However, with this said, the kind of true attachment that you must have is the one with yourself. If you can master having a strong attachment with yourself, you will develop a healthy bond and attachment to others without it compromising your well-being. When you can master this attachment, then the kind of detachment that I am referring to will be easy for you.

The kind of detachment that I am referring to is the kind where despite the fact that you may care about something or someone, you are able to separate your identity from that object or person. It is the kind of detachment where your happiness is not dependent upon what that person does or doesn’t do nor what happens or doesn’t happen. It is not dependent upon whether or not that person or thing exists in your life. The kind of detachment that I am referring to is the kind where your attachment to that object or person is not as strong as the one that you have for yourself.

Why is this kind of detachment important to your well-being? Because it is very dangerous to rely upon a circumstance or person for your happiness. It is dangerous to wait till someone does something or till something happens in order to be happy. By doing so, you are putting your life on hold, you become a burden to others rather than a blessing, you stop yourself from being your full self and you are not able to serve yourself nor others.

Detachment doesn’t have to be a bad thing, it is indeed a necessity to your well-being. What doesn’t serve you is to be completely detached to the point where you have no real feelings towards things or other people. What doesn’t serve you is to have superficial relationships just so you won’t be hurt. No, this is NOT life nor does it help create that great well-being that you need. It is important to create healthy bonds with others but that bond doesn’t have to be what your happiness is based upon. Yes, you need to have healthy attachment to things but it does not have to be THE thing that gives you all your happiness. This is where that art of detachment comes into play. The one attachment that should be so strong no matter what happens in your life is that attachment towards yourself. This is where your true happiness lies.
